Enhancing Diversity in the Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Population through Curriculum Change

Our GOAL is to reconstruct the undergraduate mechanical engineering curriculum from start to finish so that mechanical engineering is better able to attract & retain a diverse student population while maintaining or enhancing its standards for essential skills & knowledge

Our HYPOTHESIS is that mechanical engineering will attract & retain a more diverse set of students if the curriculum has greater linkages between the fundamentals & applications and between technical & nontechnical topics, more teaming experiences, shorter critical path lengths, more focus on the impact of engineering on the human experience. While recognizing the link between pedagogy & content, our focus is on curricular content.

Our PHILOSOPHY is to make the curriculum more relevant to the everyday experiences of our students in order to improve their motivation and success. As part of this process we have developed a series of ‘Real-Life Examples’.
